About Mason
I’m a 27 year-old working as a php developer. I do not dislike my current job. In fact, it has some nice perks. I get to work from home most days, allowing me to spend time with my wife (who also telecommutes most days) and my daughter. I have an excellent relationship with my boss, and I have good job security for so long as I wish to stay.
However, while this picture is a rosy one, I’ve decided I’m ready to move on. My boss is also my father-in-law. And the company I work for consists of 1 employee - not me.
I’m an independent contractor. In itself, this is not a bad thing. By structuring my taxes correctly, I end up keeping more of my pay than I would if I were an employee earning the same salary. I have no benefits, but I earn enough to afford private health insurance and put aside money in savings, and I’ve almost finished paying off my student loans.
However, it is still a small business, and both my wife and I are dependent on its continued success. I would feel that we were in a better financial situation if at least one of us had a job with a large and successful company. And as my wife is currently pregnant, I think it should be me.
The other thing I’m seeking in a new job is the chance to work alongside other people like myself. Techies, geeks, sci-fi enthusiasts… my people. I want to collaborate on a coding project with someone who has different strengths than me and who I can both assist and be assisted by. I want to work in an environment where, when there’s a new development in computing or web standards, people are interested in discussing it and finding out how or whether to incorporate it in future projects. I want to report to a boss who understands what I do, and can even offer advice. To sum it up, I want to be part of a team.
As of September, the lease will be up on my apartment. I’m willing and able to move pretty much anywhere in the U.S. if the job is right. I’m available for interview by phone most days. If you’re interested in talking to me, just call me at 540 740-4075 or 540 335-4749.
I have a good work ethic and a fun personality. I’m willing to clean out the breakroom fridge until someone newer comes along. I may not keep the neatest workspace, but I’ll make sure not to bring down the average either. Except when I’m on break, I will only use the internet for work-related activities. Even when I’m on break I won’t look up porn. And I won’t use the company email to forward office spam or make up my own strange little haikus. I will probably paste Dilbert cartoons to the bottom of my monitor, and I will probably read science fiction novels during my lunch breaks. I won’t edit Wikipedia entries from my work computer, and in general I won’t do anything to embarrass the company.
If all this sounds like what you’re looking for then let’s set up an interview and go from there.
